Meet Serif

Serif Yenen is a Turkish travel writer, licensed Istanbul guide, and Smithsonian lecturer. He wrote Turkish Odyssey, the first English-language guidebook trilogy to Turkey written by a Turk, and he produced and directed the documentary Istanbul Unveiled, which won eight international film awards. On Cultured Travel’s history tour of Istanbul, he serves as the licensed local guide alongside Dr. Thomas Madden.

He earned his guide license in 1989, after a military high school and an English literature degree at the University of Istanbul. The title is not honorary in Turkey. Every professional guide is examined and licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, and only a licensed guide may legally lead visitors through the country’s historic sites. Serif has held that license for more than 37 years. In 1997 he added the credential that no other guide in the city could claim, which was the guidebook itself.

Guidebook authors tend to stop guiding once the writing takes over, and working guides rarely sit down to write the definitive book. Serif kept doing both, in the same city, across the same decades. The clients who hired him privately over those years include Pope Benedict XVI, Oprah Winfrey, Princess Michael of Kent, and the NBC anchor, Lester Holt. A roster like that is not won with charm. It’s won by being the person an organization trusts when a single afternoon in Istanbul cannot go wrong.

His teaching runs alongside the guiding. He has worked as a part-time instructor at Bilgi University and at Boğaziçi University, and he has lectured on Turkish history at the Smithsonian Institution, at Boston University, and at the Penn Museum. The topics he’s invited to speak on span the same ground you would cover with him on foot, reaching from the Anatolian civilizations through Byzantine Constantinople to the Ottoman capital. He is, in the most literal sense, a private Istanbul guide who also teaches the history he is showing you.

What that means for a traveler is easy to feel within the first hour. A licensed guide who has read the city for 37 years does not march a group past a monument and recite its dates. He knows which courtyard is quiet at ten in the morning, which inscription on a wall opens onto a story that runs three empires deep, and how the call to prayer changes the mood of a square you are standing in. That kind of reading cannot be memorized the week before. It accrues, slowly, in a person who has spent a life in one place and kept asking it questions.

Turkish Odyssey and Istanbul Unveiled

Turkish Odyssey was the first English-language guidebook to Turkey written by a Turk, published in 1997. For most of the twentieth century the standard guides to the country were written by outsiders looking in, careful and well-meaning and always at one remove. Serif wrote his from within the culture he was describing, and readers noticed the difference.

Universities adopted the book as a course text. Rather than aging out of print, it grew. The 2025 edition reaches three volumes and 1,372 pages under his own imprint, Serif Yenen Travel Publishing, and Foreword Reviews covered the new release. A guidebook that professors assign to students has cleared a bar most travel writing never comes near, because assignment depends on trust in the accuracy of every page.

Serif produced, directed, and wrote the documentary, Istanbul Unveiled. It was released in 2014 and premiered at the Smithsonian, and it went on to win eight international film awards. Among them are Best Feature Documentary at the USA World Music and Independent Film Festival in Washington, D.C., Best Documentary at the Sunset Film Festival in Los Angeles, a Special Award at the Zagreb Tour Film Festival, and the Golden Award in Culture and Traditions at the Baku International Tourism Film Festival.

Festivals this far apart draw juries who share almost no cultural assumptions, and a film that moves all of them has done what a guide must do in front of a mixed group, which is to make a place legible to whoever happens to be standing there.

The book and the film are both attempts to carry the Istanbul that residents hold in their heads across to people who are seeing it for the first time. A traveler walking the city with Serif is getting the third version of that project, the live one that’s shaped in real time around the group in front of him.

Serif and Cultured Travel

Serif co-leads Cultured Travel’s history tour of Istanbul, guiding the ground and sharing the teaching with Dr. Thomas Madden, the medieval historian who wrote Istanbul: City of Majesty at the Crossroads of the World. He also leads our Best of Turkey tour which can be done as a stand alone tour or done as an extension of the Istanbul tour.

The pairing also answers a question a careful traveler tends to ask. If Serif maintains his own site and takes private clients, why book this trip through Cultured Travel?

The two aren’t the same. Booking Serif directly gets you Serif.

Booking the trip gets you Serif, a second scholar, a route and a season chosen with intent, a small group, and a set of logistics carried by someone else so the week belongs to you rather than to your inbox. Cultured Travel builds each trip around the particular people who can teach a place best.

Where You Can Travel with Serif

Serif co-leads the history tour of Istanbul alongside Dr. Thomas Madden. The two scholars bring complementary expertise to different aspects of the city’s history, and Serif handles the local knowledge that only a registered guide can provide in Turkey.
